[Back to Internships]

Company Name: W. W. NORTON & COMPANY
Description: W. W. Norton, the largest and oldest publishing house owned wholly by its employees, is looking for a rising or current junior or senior to intern in its trade managing editorial department, starting in January 2018. This paid internship will provide hands-on experience working on books in a variety of ways—from proofreading and copyediting to putting a manuscript together; transcribing author and proofreader changes; and checking proofs, blues, and miscellaneous parts of a book. The intern will spend ample time working alongside project editors on a wide range of hardcover, paperback, and digital titles. Additionally, Norton interns have the chance to learn about the company as a whole in weekly brown bag lunches with employees from Norton’s other departments, and may choose to attend the seasonal sales conference.
Length of Internship: 3 months, 20 hours per week
Requirements: The ideal applicant has an observant eye for detail and takes pleasure in the revision process. Applicants should also have strong organizational and communication skills. Some basic experience with proofreading—that is, reading a copyedited page against typeset text—is a requirement. Candidates must pass a proofreading test before proceeding to an interview.

Specific work hours are flexible, but interns typically work three or four days a week for three months. The hourly rate is $13, and Norton interns work no more than 20 hours per week. Our office is located in the heart of Midtown, on Fifth Avenue, across from the New York Public Library and Bryant Park, and within two blocks of the Theater District and Times Square.
Location: New York, NY
Application Due Date: December 15, 2017
Payment: $13/hour
How To Apply For This Internship: If you are interested in this internship opportunity, please submit a résumé and cover letter detailing relevant areas of experience to Amy Medeiros at amedeiros@wwnorton.com. In your cover letter, please include your weekly availability for up to 20 hours per week. Applications will be accepted until December 15; applications received after that date will be considered on a rolling basis if the position has not yet been filled.
